AVP on the ABC

In an interview as part of an ABC news story SA Attorney-General Michael Atkinson has supported the Classification Board’s decision to refuse classification to Aliens vs Predator.

“You don’t need to be playing a game in which you impale, decapitate and dismember people.”

In discussing the movement for an R18+ rating for computer games in Australia he remarks:

“This is a question of a small number of very zealous gamers trying to impose their will on society. And I think harm society. It’s the public interest versus the small vested interest.”

The video also features Ron Curry CEO of iGEA who supports the introduction of the R18+.

“This is a question of a small number of very zealous gamers trying to impose their will on society”?????

This – coming from a man imposing his belief onto the public who additionally will not engage in any form of rational debate regarding them. Gee, I sure wonder who’s trying to impose their will on who, Atkinson – you hypocrite.

We’ve learned quite a lot out of polling the public, through with the help of the industry and random doorknocks, there’s been wide support for people for the R18+ classification, there’s been a huge amount however of people who don’t even know there’s not a R18+ classification and we’ve been educating them about it.

The more the media jumps in on this, the more the public can see the stupidity of us not having an R18+ classification for video games and of Atkinson in general.

Well that’s politics. An ignorant man is allowed to create or prevent laws that suit him, yet a majority of people get ignored when it comes to actually improving the system.

I really take offense at the idea that as a gamer I am trying to harm society. I’m about as non-violent as they get, and give an arse-load to charity, too. It raises my hackles to have this git pointing fingers like this.
